Cansancio Tears
Cansancio Tears is a violent exercise to challenge power structures in a moving body informed by a cultural, political, and social context. This interactive, research-led performance aims to question and exhaust the masculine perception of Latin American women established through patriarchal and colonialist structures which are embedded in religion, codes of conduct, narco-culture, and the ‘macho’ figure in societies like Colombia and Argentina.
The exercise comprises an 8-hour interactive movement sequence performed by Latin American women. Audience members receive a command card to be used on the performers: Fall, Speak, Shut up, Dance, Stop, Kneel and Dress-Undress. They can use these commands as many times as they want, on the only condition that they speak clearly. Through this audience-performer relationship, Cansancio Tears aims at dislocating power relations within the Latin American system, by making its devices and their performative power evident.
There have been 4 iterations of Cansancio Tears, previously presented at: BRINK Festival, RCSSD, 2016; Emerging Artists Series, Volcano Theatre, Canada, 2017; Performance Philosophy Biennale, Amsterdam, 2019.
The next iteration will be performed as part of Tate Exchange: Working Disobedience, in collaboration with 20 performers (date TBD).
